For her Girl Scout Gold Award project, 2020 L-S graduate Allyson Deihl recently transformed a picnic area outside of L-S High School into a tranquil garden for students struggling with mental health. Allyson sent this statement to describe the process:

My Gold Award project is called The Helping Others through Positive Energy Garden, or The HOPE Garden for short. The HOPE Garden is so much more than a garden; it is a mental health awareness tool. Schools around the country and around the world struggle to find ways to be proactive when it comes to addressing the mental health of their students. The HOPE Garden, housed at Lampeter Strasburg High School, is meant to become a new outlet for students struggling with mental health, focusing on taking away the intimidating factor of facing a conversation with a counselor or teacher concerning their mental health. In the garden, you will find plants hand picked to appeal to the five senses for calming effects, a cubby filled with mental health resources, brochures, QR codes, and rocks hand painted with uplifting messages and positive colors. Mental health is something so many people struggle with worldwide, and given the current pandemic we face, it is an increasingly pressing topic. More can always be done to destigmatize, bring awareness to, and help those who struggle with mental health. Doing more for mental health in my community is ultimately my mission for The HOPE Garden, and I am so appreciative of all of those who supported me in this journey and helped bring The HOPE Garden to life.

Allyson's fellow scouts in Senior Ambassador Troop 70905 supported her by painting rocks during summer meetings. The Hans Herr Girl Scout Service Unit also is dedicated to the garden's continued success.

When not in use for its intended purpose, the garden serves as a stress-relieving meditation or lunch spot for staff members and a welcoming site on campus.

Many thanks to Allyson for choosing this beautification project for her community project!
