About Martin Meylin
Martin Meylin is a middle school of 800+ sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Our school is dedicated to the middle school philosophy of interdisciplinary teaming. We offer a varied approach of teaching with half group and large group instruction. Students have the opportunity to enrich their education through various field trips, technology labs, and a dedicated teaching staff.
Our school bears the name of an early eighteenth century Swiss blacksmith - gunsmith who settled along the Pequea in West Lampeter Township. This land was purchased in 1710. The settlers struggled in many ways. Martin Meylin, one of the most skillful iron workman of his day, produced greatly needed items in his boring mill to service the other colonists.
Team teaching was introduced to Martin Meylin in 1967 by Mr. George W. Myers, principal at Martin Meylin from 1967 - 1988. A single floor building design, interdisciplinary teaming, half group, and large group instruction were new concepts at that time. This process and structure have served the needs of middle school students through the past forty years. As we proceed through the 21st Century teaming and addressing the academic and developmental needs of our students have never been more important.
All grades are organized into interdisciplinary teams of teachers. Each team under the direction of a team leader, meet twice weekly to coordinate large group instruction, field trips, and special projects, discuss student progress, meet with parents, and consider any other matters that may effect the team. The guidance counselor attends one or more meetings each week.
