The L-S Class of 2018 will be graduating in a few short months. Here are some facts to help you prepare for the big day:
What is the 2018 graduation date?
The date for 2018 commencement exercises will be officially announced after the April 3 meeting of the L-S Board of School Directors. The decision is made at this time so that we are past the threat of winter weather delaying the end of the school year. Traditionally, we prefer to hold graduation on a Friday and at this time our target date is June 1, if possible. This is also the tentative last day of school for all students.
Where will graduation take place?
We are currently in the midst of an extensive Outdoor Athletic Campus Enhancement Plan, which includes a full renovation of the stadium and field where outdoor commencement exercises are held. This year, graduation will take place indoors at the L-S High School Performing Arts Center. Each senior will be provided with general admission tickets, most likely four per person. Satellite seating also will be available in the cafeteria, and the full ceremony will be streamed on our YouTube channel. Family and friends around the world with internet access will be able to view the graduation ceremony live to celebrate the accomplishments of the L-S Class of 2018.
Are students wearing different gowns than in the past?
As communicated with the senior class earlier this year, we are switching from white gowns for girls and blue gowns for boys to blue gowns with a white victory hood for all graduates. We made this decision after finding an option through our new vendor that allows all graduates to display both school colors during the ceremony. Feedback from previous senior classes also was an important factor in this decision. In the past, many girls have felt compelled to purchase white clothing and shoes because darker colors showed through their white gowns. Graduates are now provided more flexibility, as they will be able to wear any color under their gowns. In addition, siblings and friends will now be able to more easily pass down gowns, reducing the cost for families moving forward.
When is the Senior Awards Ceremony?
The Senior Awards Ceremony will take place on Thursday, May 17. Last year, L-S seniors received nearly $80,000 in scholarships from local benefactors. Applications for dozens of senior scholarships are available now. Paper copies can be obtained in the L-S High School Guidance Office or downloaded from our website. The deadline for all senior award applications is Friday, March 16.
Will there be a senior walk?
The L-S senior walk has quickly become one of the District’s most popular traditions. It’s an unforgettable trip down memory lane for the senior class. Younger students are inspired by the soon-to-be graduates, while teachers and staff members enjoy seeing students they may have had in class in the past. This year’s senior walk will be held on a date to be announced during the last week of school.
When is Baccalaureate?
Information regarding Baccalaureate will be provided as soon as it is available. This event is sponsored by the L-S Ministerium.
We are looking forward to a successful and memorable commencement for every member of the L-S Class of 2018. If you have further questions about graduation plans, please contact the L-S High School office at (717) 464-3311, ext. 2000.
