Students Write and Record Winning VFW Essays

VFW Essay Winners: Grace Remollino with Dr. Feeney and Ms. Miller from the VFW Post 7294 Auxiliary; Bethany Barrall with Mr. Fantazzi and Ms. Miller; Pierson Castor with Dr. Feeney and Ms. Miller
- Eighth grader Bethany Barrall received first place in the middle school Patriot’s Pen youth essay writing contest for her writing based on the theme of “Why I Honor the American Flag.” Bethany received a cash award of $300 from the VFW and $100 from the Auxiliary.
- Freshman Grace Remollino received first place in the high school Voice of Democracy audio essay competition for her recording based on the theme of “Why My Vote Matters.” Grace received a cash award of $300 from the VFW and $100 from the Auxiliary.
- Senior Pierson Castor received second place in the high school Voice of Democracy contest for his recording based on the theme of “Why My Vote Matters.” Pierson received a cash award of $200 from the VFW and $75 from the Auxiliary.
Bethany’s and Grace’s essays will advance to the regional VFW competition and could move forward to state and national competitions. More than 120,000 middle school students and 40,000 high school students submit VFW-sponsored essays each year.
