Author-Illustrator Bruce Hale Zooms with Lampeter Elementary School Students
Children's author-illustrator Bruce Hale says goodbye to first-grade classes after a Zoom assembly on April 9.
Children's author-illustrator Bruce Hale virtually visited Lampeter Elementary School last week for a series of Zoom assemblies. Prior to the visit, students learned about Mr. Hale’s style as an author-illustrator, enjoyed stories including Clark the Shark and Class Pets: Fuzzy’s Great Escape, and even “visited” his hometown of Santa Barbara, CA, using Google Earth. Students also celebrated the author's visit with Hat Days at Lampeter Elementary, in honor of Mr. Hale’s extensive collection.
“Teachers and students alike have long been fans of Clark the Shark, a lovable character that has been incorporated into Lampeter Elementary School’s pro-social skills lessons, said elementary librarian Amanda Spealman. "When the P.T.O. asked if an author’s visit would still be a possibility this year, I figured that Bruce Hale would be a fantastic choice to get kids excited to read and write. He certainly did not disappoint! Mr. Hale’s energy and enthusiasm were incredible. It was heart-warming to see kids and teachers alike, dancing, laughing, and enjoying his engaging style. We are all so very grateful to the PTO for their ongoing support and commitment to the students here at Lampeter Elementary.”
At each assembly, Mr. Hale greeted students with an aloha before talking about the power of books, imagination, practice, and persistence. He then read some of his works including Clark the Shark aloud to students, took questions, and demonstrated how he creates illustrations. Assemblies began and ended with upbeat dance parties and lots of smiles and laughter. Students also enjoyed seeing their online classmates, who joined in on the fun from home.
