Fourteen L-S vocalists received audition scores high enough to advance to this year’s PMEA District 7 Chorus. There was no Lancaster-Lebanon County Chorus festival this year due to COVID-19, so students competed directly against their peers from Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York Counties for their spots. Junior Cassie Meck, an Alto 1, and senior Rowen Krantz, a Bass 1, are first chair in their sections while senior Grace Ongosi, an Alto 2, is second chair.
The audition process was new to everyone this year, including choral director Erik Welchans, who served as a Tenor 2 judge.
“Students studied two large works ahead of time, then learned on Friday what the excerpts would be for their auditions,” Mr. Welchans explained. “Then, we had to create videos by midnight on Thursday for the audition.”
Judges scored videos on Saturday, October 24, and published results later that day. Mr. Welchans was thrilled that nearly all of the vocalists who auditioned advanced to the next level.
The District 7 Festival will combine chorus, orchestra, and band and will be held virtually at a date to be determined. It will include live masterclasses and Q&A sessions with local musicians. A District 7 choral director also plans to combine each vocalist’s acapella audition to create a virtual choir experience for the students using the "Kyrie" from Josef Rheinberger's Mass in E-flat Major, one of the student's audition selections. All interested choral, orchestra, and band students can sit in for the festival.
Because there will be no regional festival this year, all selected vocalists are eligible to audition for the PMEA All-State Festival on April 14-17, 2021. The 200-member All-State Chorus plans to perform live via Zoom with a conductor.
Congratulations to our 2021 District Chorus Members!
