Local is best according to L-S! This week students at Lampeter and Hans Herr Elementary Schools received a visit from local author Mara Rockliff in celebration of Young Author’s Week. Ms. Rockliff, a Lancaster County resident, has written over thirteen picture books, many of which feature hidden gems in American history. Several of her books are award winners including Mesmerized: How Benjamin Franklin Solved a Mystery that Baffled All of France; which is the winner of the Cook Prize for STEM-themed children’s literature. She is also the author of the mystery series Milo and Jazz.
During her four-day visit to Lampeter-Strasburg School District, Ms. Rockliff presented three different assemblies. Each assembly was specially geared towards different ages of young writers. Kindergartners and first graders learned how authors become inspired to write and the essential components of a story. Second and third graders focused in on the writing process and saw how revising work improves its quality. Fourth and fifth graders discussed the importance of finding reliable resources when researching.
Students were eager to meet the author after reading many of her books, and were energized by her advice. Third grade teacher Cindy Baker shared that her students wanted to spend the rest of the morning writing imaginative stories after attending the assembly and hearing Ms. Rockliff explain how many of her own brainstorming sessions began with a simple, “Wouldn’t it be fun if…”
Young Author’s Week has been a tradition at L-S since 1984, and is generously funded by the schools’ Parent-Teacher Organizations.
At Lampeter Elementary, Ms. Rockliff talked to students about all of the ingredients necessary to make Story Soup.
