Primary school teacher Elizabeth Esbenshade-Fluck has been named as the 2019 L-S Teacher of the Year. She was selected by her peers and administrators and presented with the District’s Master of Pedagogy Award at the annual end of year recognition banquet on May 10, 2019.

“My favorite thing about teaching is the AHA moment when a student makes the connection,” Fluck said. “The process the students go through to get there isn’t always easy. It takes perseverance but through it all you can see their growing confidence, independence, and love for learning.”

Fluck’s colleagues at Lampeter Elementary school describe her as tenacious and passionate about doing what’s best for every child. Students describe her as kind, respectful, and smart; someone who teaches them to make good choices. She describes herself as a lifelong learner who is always searching for new and different ways to teach.

Fluck began her L-S career in 2005 as a long-term substitute first grade teacher at Willow Street Elementary School. She transferred to Lampeter Elementary when Willow Street Elementary closed in 2008. Esbenshade-Fluck previously taught as a first grade classroom teacher as well as a second/third grade special education teacher at Perryville Elementary School in Cecil County, Maryland. A Lancaster native, she is a graduate of Lancaster Country Day School, Elon College, and the University of Delaware. She currently resides in Lancaster city with her husband, two school-age sons, and two cats.

In addition to her classroom duties, Fluck is the first grade team leader and chair of the school’s technology team. She’s a member of several curricular committees, including STEM and TEAMS, and is known as the tech guru at Lampeter Elementary School.

Each August, Fluck heads to Lancaster County Park in search of monarch caterpillars to bring to school so her new students can watch each transform into a chrysalis and then to a butterfly. She sees the metamorphosis as a great analogy both for her life as a teacher as well as for the lives of her young students.

“How does the Monarch know what to do once we release it from the cage?” said Fluck about the yearly tradition and its greater meaning. “It does what it knows to do. It flies over 3,000 miles to Mexico. We have helped prepare the Monarch for this incredible journey through feeding, a comfortable environment, and love and care.”

Congratulations to Elizabeth Esbenshade-Fluck, 2019 Lampeter-Strasburg Teacher of the Year!
