Brayground web

Dr. William Bray poses with 2019-2020 Lampeter Elementary PTO President Tiffany Heil in front of the musical playground equipment installed in his honor.

Nine members of the L-S family retired at the end of the 2019-2020 school year, taking with them nearly 150 years of combined service to the community's children. Our heartfelt thanks goes to each of the retirees for their service and dedication. We look forward to honoring them in person as soon as possible and wish them each the very best in retirement.

Congratulations!

2020 Retirees

William Bray, Ed.D.
Lampeter Elementary School Principal

Dr. Bray joined Lampeter-Strasburg School District in 1998 as the Principal of Strasburg and Willow Street Elementary Schools. Dr. Bray also served as the Elementary Coordinator and most recently as the Principal of Lampeter Elementary. Dr. Bray graduated from Susquehanna University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. He earned his Master’s Degree from Bucknell University and his Doctorate from Immaculata University. In retirement, Dr. Bray plans to rediscover his love of playing music, pursue a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, plan a family trip to Italy, and thoroughly enjoy the next chapter of life with his family and friends. We thank Dr. Bray for his dedicated service to the Lampeter-Strasburg School District and wish him well in retirement.

-Dr. Kevin Peart, Superintendent

The Lampeter Elementary School PTO recognized Dr. Bray by purchasing playground equipment in his honor. Because Dr. Bray began his career in education as a music teacher, the PTO chose equipment with a musical theme. Thanks to their generosity, two new pieces will greet students this year: a set of four colorful flowers that play distinct chords when the petals are struck; and a standing four-panel set that includes percussion, chimes, a horn section, and bells. Through the new playground equipment, Lampeter Elementary students will be making music and good memories for years to come.

Betty Devlin
Lampeter Elementary School Kitchen Manager

"Mrs. Betty Devlin joined the L-S family in 2005 as a kitchen helper at L-S High School. She soon advanced to assistant baker and then to the kitchen manager at Willow Street Elementary School. In July 2008, she became the kitchen manager at Lampeter Elementary. I have had the pleasure of getting to know Miss Betty over this past school year. She is an extremely hard worker and is very dedicated to her team, students, and staff. She will be greatly missed. In her retirement, Miss Betty plans to spend more time with her grandchildren, enjoying life! We thank Miss Betty for her sincere dedication and service to Lampeter Strasburg School District and wish her the best in retirement!"

-Mrs. Cheryl Schmidt, Lampeter-Strasburg Food Service Director

Lisa Figurelli
Elementary Division Mathematics Program Specialist

"Mrs. Lisa Figurelli joined the L-S family in 1996. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Millersville University and a Master’s Degree in Education from Penn State University. During her time with our district, she was a consummate professional and skilled leader. Lisa was one of the first teachers to implement the rotational model in the classroom. Her willingness to take such a risk helped lead to an instructional reform across Hans Herr and the district. Most recently, in her role as an Elementary Math Program Specialist, Lisa led the development of a system in which students receive consistent math intervention instruction. Throughout her career, Lisa earned respect and admiration from her colleagues. Her significant contributions will continue to positively impact student learning in the years to come. We thank Lisa for her amazing dedication to the Lampeter-Strasburg School District and wish her the absolute best during a most well-deserved retirement!"

-Dr. Jeffrey Smecker, Hans Herr Elementary School Principal

Beth Hendrix
Hans Herr Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher

"Mrs. Beth Hendrix became part of the L-S family as a substitute in 1998 and became a full-time teacher in 2000. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations from the University of Delaware and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Millersville University. We will always remember Beth for her commitment to lifelong learning and professionalism. As both a primary and intermediate grade teacher, Beth challenged herself each year to learn new skills and develop professionally. She was always committed to improving her craft and serving her students. Beth was among the first recipients of the district’s classroom design challenge. As a result, her vision of a flexible learning environment came to fruition, and she paved the way for so many others to follow. Beth’s contributions to the Hans Herr team were beyond measure. Her insatiable positivity and ability to lead by example helped cultivate a school climate and culture that always placed students’ needs first. We thank Beth for her devotion to our school and district and wish her the best in a well-earned retirement!"

-Dr. Jeffrey Smecker, Hans Herr Elementary School Principal

Rae Ann Henry
Martin Meylin Middle School Library Assistant

"Mrs. Rae Ann Henry has been the library assistant at Martin Meylin Middle School since 2006. When she first started in the role, the library began to morph into a place that everyone wanted to go for many reasons. First, it was to see Mrs. Henry. Second, it was to get her recommendations. And third, it was to get some of the positive vibes from Mrs. Henry. Since Mrs. Henry began in the library 15 years ago, our circulation in books has increased to over 25,000 a year. Two years ago, when the middle school went one-to-the-world with computers, students were assigned computers but needed a place to complete tech tickets or sign out loaners. The administration decided that the library, as the hub of the school, would be the place to do these tasks. Mrs. Henry saw the amount of work going to the tech department, so she trained herself to troubleshoot some problems to help. That is excellence on the job, and it shows her commitment to the school. Never mind the school, Mrs. Henry does it because it is what is best for the students."

-Mr. Jamie Raum, Martin Meylin Middle School Principal

Ann Kramer
Martin Meylin Middle School Reading Assistant

"Mrs. Ann Kramer served as a Title 1 reading tutor at Martin Meylin Middle School since 2011. She is a graduate of Penn State University and earned her reading specialist certificate from Millersville University. She always put students first and had no problem developing a rapport with them. There was a year that I needed a part-time family and consumer science teacher. Ann had never taught the subject but was well versed in a lot of the concepts. She was able to step in and meet all the students’ needs. Ann will be missed at Martin Meylin. Her positive attitude and caring personality have been a true asset to the building."

-Mr. Jamie Raum, Martin Meylin Middle School Principal

Michele Meyer
Lampeter-Strasburg High School Business Education Teacher

"Ms. Michele Meyer joined the team at Lampeter-Strasburg High School 20 years ago as a substitute teacher. Over the next four years, she served as a long-term substitute for multiple teachers, including in our Alternative Education Program. Then in 2004, she transitioned to become our in-school suspension monitor and homebound instructor until 2011. In 2011, Ms. Meyer became a business education instructor, teaching our Managing Your Finances course at the high school from 2011-2020. Ms. Meyer received her Bachelor’s Degree in Art from Misericordia University and earned her teaching certification through Millersville University. In retirement, Ms. Meyer plans to travel across the United States and Ireland and spend a lot of extra time with her children and grandchildren: George VI, Maggie, and Gus. She plans to spend more time enjoying many of her hobbies - including art, music, golf, tennis, kayaking, swimming, and hiking - and will continue working on many home projects, and volunteering at her church and in the community. We hope she will take a little time for herself, too, as it sounds like she has a pretty busy calendar, but she wouldn’t want it any other way. We want to thank Ms. Meyer for her twenty years of service to the Lampeter-Strasburg School District, and we wish her all the best in her retirement!"

-Dr. Benjamin Feeney, L-S High School Principal

Richard Peiffer
Lampeter Elementary School Custodian

"Mr. Richard Peiffer has been a custodian at Lampeter Elementary School since the building opened its doors in 2008. He served as a second shift custodian for six years before transitioning to a dayshift custodian in 2014. He was a friendly face to Lampeter’s young students, who lovingly referred to him as “Mr. Rick” and “Cookie Monster” because he would joke at lunchtime about eating everyone’s cookies. In retirement, Rick will continue to work around the house and cheer on all of the Pittsburgh sports teams. He has been an asset to the L-S custodial team and will be missed."

-Mr. Glenn Davis, Lampeter-Strasburg Buildings and Grounds Director

Linda Sensenig
Lampeter-Strasburg High School Kitchen Helper

"Mrs. Linda Sensenig joined the L-S family in August of 2008 as a kitchen helper at the High School. She proudly served the student body daily, and always with a smile. Her pleasant nature made her a wonderful team member to work alongside. In her retirement, Mrs. Sensenig is looking forward to being a nanny for her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed. We thank Mrs. Sensenig for her dedication and service to the Lampeter-Strasburg School District and wish her the best in retirement."
