Organ & Tissue Donation Awareness Grant Kicks Off
Team managers Nasya Warfel, Ashlee Conrad, and Jenna Manion wear Pioneer Nation: Donate Life t-shirts at the September 13 home football game to promote organ & tissue donation awareness.
The Lampeter-Strasburg High School District’s health department received a $2,000 grant from the Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness (OTDA) Project to help combat the national donor shortage. The grant is run through Lancaster Lebanon IU 13 and funds will be used to raise awareness in the community, especially among new drivers. The Scrub Club (Future Nurses Club) will be helping to raise awareness as their community service project.
OTDA’s website states that each person “who applies for a PA driver’s license is asked to make a decision that could mean life or death to one of more than 7,000 Pennsylvanians who are currently on the transplant waiting list.” The program aims to provide students with the information needed to make informed decisions about organ and tissue donation.
The grant officially kicked off on Friday, September 13, at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. Students were encouraged to wear blue and green to school and the initiative was selected as the theme for the evening’s football game. Players, cheerleaders, ticket sellers, football managers, and Scrub Club members received free OTDA t-shirts along with the first 150 students to arrive in the stadium’s student section. Representatives from the Scrub Club, OTDA and Gift of Life set up an informational table at the game to speak with community members about the importance of organ and tissue donation.
OTDA activities are set to continue throughout the school year and will be run through the Lampeter-Strasburg High School Scrub Club.
