Students Receive National Medals in Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Three L-S students have earned prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing National Medals in 2018. Seventh grader Bethany Barral received a Gold Medal for writing while seniors Shannon Ferrari and Hayden Goldberg each medaled for their art portfolios. Hayden received a Silver Medal and Shannon received a Silver Medal with Distinction. Their work may be on display this summer as part of the national Art.Write.Now.Tour as well as in the Scholastic Awards online gallery. As a Gold Medal winner, Bethany also will be recognized at a ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City this summer.

Bethany Barrall (Class of 2023)

Bethany is the daughter of Stephen and Jennifer Barrall of Strasburg. She received both a Gold Key and a National Gold Medal this year in the novel writing category for an excerpt from her novel Sunrise. The full book is approximately 25,000 words in length and is a “don’t judge a book by its cover” story of a young girl who is thought to be cursed.

Shannon Ferrari (Class of 2018)

Shannon is the daughter of Christopher and Micaela Ferrari of Willow Street. Shannon was an American Visions Medal winner and a Gold Medal winner for mixed media in 2017. This year, Shannon received a Scholastic Gold Key in art portfolio, a Silver Key in printmaking, and a Silver Key in sculpture at the regional level. Regionally, she also received the Echo Valley Sculpture Award, a Merit Award, and the Sandra Fruitman Award. Shannon has always enjoyed art but really found her passion in high school through art classes. Her winning portfolio was inspired by women’s empowerment, the #metoo and Time’s Up movements, and women in art - in particular the Venus of Willendorf. Shannon plans to attend art school in Philadelphia to major in art history and curatorial studies and hopes to become an art museum curator.
