2019 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists Announced

Three L-S seniors have been named as Semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Jarrett Emmerling
Jarrett is the son of Greg and Cynthia Emmerling of Lancaster. He is a member of the varsity Quiz Bowl team as well as the Asian Culture Club and the STEM Club. Jarrett plans to study mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering in college.
Kristen Mast
Kristen is the daughter of Brian and Karen Mast of Lancaster. She is a National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society member and is involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, including orchestra and pit orchestra, L-S Thespian Society, WLSH, the PAC tech crew, and the varsity tennis team. After graduation, Kristen plans to study pre-med with a concentration in biology.
Jansen Miller
Jansen is the son of Brian and Heather Miller of Lancaster. He is a three-time recipient of the District's Burrowes Scholar award (twice for math) and is a member of the National Honor Society. Jansen also involved in the concert and jazz bands and is a member of the varsity cross country and track teams. He plans to study mathematics in college.
Over 1.6 million high school juniors took the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
The Semifinalists will now have an opportunity to continue in the competition to for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. Over 90 percent of Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the title of Merit Scholar.
