Mr. Esh in his classroom
English teacher Mr. Calvin Esh is the recipient of the Teacher of the Month award for February 2017. He is the second teacher honored in the school's new program. Mr. Esh is in his 23rd year as an L-S faculty member. He received both student and staff nominations.
Here's some more information about our new Teacher of the Month:
Life Outside of School:
I live just south of Strasburg with my wife, my son Isaac, a junior, and Davide Ragazzoni, a senior exchange student from Milan, and three cats. I grew up in Intercourse, so I’m a local boy, with an L-S connection—my father attended the one-room school at Walnut Run. He always had high praise for his teacher there. I enjoy biking in my free time/over the summer.
Arguably coaching and love of sports got me into teaching. I coached while I was still in school, and I coached for the first 15 years I taught, until my son was born. I only got back into coaching recently, and it’s a joy to have cross country and track and field athletes in class, to greet a class day one of a semester and see familiar faces, to start a class with that unique connection, literally being on the same team. And that rapport goes both ways—from team to class, from class to team.
What Classes Do You Teach?
I currently teach British Literature and A.P. Literature and Composition. First semester I taught American Literature and Shakespeare. I also serve as an adviser to the GSA and to Shakespeare club.
What's the Best Part of Teaching?
The best part of teaching is, of course, working with students, seeing them grow, and learn, and grow up. We are fortunate to have such a supportive community here and to have such wonderful kids to work with.
Advice for Students:
My only advice to students would be to aim high, work hard, and get involved at school beyond the classroom—preferably cross country or track and field, of course! You learn to know other students, you learn to know teachers and coaches, and you learn so much about yourself.
