Here's more about our newest Teacher of the Month:
Life Before L-S
I grew up in Erie, PA. I have 5 brothers and a sister (ages 51-59). I attended Erie Cathedral Prep High School (all boys school, we had to wear a jacket and tie to school every day). Basketball has always been my biggest hobby. I played in high school (won a AAA state championship my junior hear - 1980, we went 33-1), what a great experience. I went to Washington & Jefferson College (business degree), graduated in 1985. Two days after graduation, flew to Tampa, FL, for my first job at Jim Walter Homes, Inc., working in the accounts payable department for a large fleet of vehicles. After a couple of years, moved to Fort Myers, FL, moved over to the mortgage side of the same company, collecting mortgage payments. I lived in Fort Myers for 5 years, met my wife in Fort Myers and got married in Florida in 1990.
At the time I was working at C&S National bank as a credit analyst in Florida is when I decided I wanted to be a teacher. My oldest brother is a math teacher at Erie Cathedral Prep and I always wanted to teach math and coach high school basketball. So here I am 23 years later. This is my 23rd year teaching at L-S. I can’t believe it has been 23 years. I LOVE teaching at L-S! I will never forget my first interview in July 1994. I drove over 4 hours to the interview. My wife was due with our first child (JD) in August 1994 and she was waiting for me in Strasburg at the Creamery. When I picked her up after the interview, she asked me how it went and I said to her, there is no way I will get this job, it is too good to be true. A week later I was offered the job.
What Do You Teach?
I currently teach AP Calculus and Geometry. I have been teaching AP Calculus for many years now and it has been an incredible experience for me. It has been very challenging at but I really enjoy interacting with the students and being able to help in some way. Our students at L-S are unique and great to be around. This is the best part of teaching. Seeing the students grow and improve over the course of their high school careers.
What's Special About L-S?
I was so impressed with the people. That is why L-S is special, everybody was so supportive and sincere. The administrators, the parents and most of all, my colleagues. This is a special place and I feel very fortunate to be able to teach here. I could not imagine being anywhere else.
Advice for Students:
My advice for students, enjoy your high school experience, work hard, get the most out of it that you can. Attend school daily, participate, ask questions. This will get you on the right track and set up your future
