Eberly Wins 2017 National Geographic Geography Bee
Geography bee contestants receive instructions from BEAR team social studies teacher Mr. Bournelis.
“The Blue Mountains are visible from Kingston, the capitol of which island country?”
By correctly answering this question as Jamaica, eighth grader Nathan Eberly earned his second straight title at Martin Meylin’s 17th annual National Geographic Geography Bee on January 11. He faced off against 15 middle school classmates in seven rounds of play to claim the title of Geography Bee champion. Eighth graders Ben Beattie and Colin McDonald placed second and third, respectively.
Geography bee contestants earned their spots by winning classroom contests, with each middle school team sending two students to the finals. Martin Meylin’s social studies department coordinated the competition, which is organized nationally by National Geographic to “inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world.” At Martin Meylin, the audience could play along and see contestants’ answers in real time, which added to the excitement.
Rounds were themed with names like “Weird, but True” and “Culture Connection.” The field was narrowed to 10 students after the first 30 questions, then again to the top five students after 50 questions. At this point, play moved from laptops to white-boards and the questions became increasingly difficult. In total, the finalists gave more than 70 answers.
Students in grades 4-8 from 11,000 schools are participating in this year’s National Geographic Bee. As the Lampeter-Strasburg winner, Nathan will now take an online test to qualify for the state bee. If he is among the 100 top scorers in Pennsylvania, he will compete in Harrisburg on March 3, 2017. State winners will advance to the national bee, which will be held from May 15-17, 2017, in Washington, D.C.
Congratulations to Nathan and to all of the Geography Bee contestants!
