Fifth Graders Work With Robots Through STEM in Gear
Students visit with Baxter the robot and his handler, STEM in Gear's David Manning.
Mrs. Maser and Mrs. Strawser’s fifth grade classes recently received some hands-on robotics training through STEM In Gear, a K-12 program from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. The classes prepared for the two-day visit by reading and discussing a book about robots. On the first day, Thaddeus Stevens physics professor David Manning introduced the program and distributed easy-to-use Edison robots. Students worked in small groups, programming the Edison robots to perform tasks around the classroom. Professor Manning returned on day two with Baxter, a teachable three-foot-tall robot with moveable arms and an animated face, to demonstrate more advanced robotic technology.
