District Receives Technology Grant from Dart Foundation
LSHS Principal Dr. Benjamin Feeney (center) meets with Dart Foundation representatives to receive the grant
Lampeter-Strasburg School District received a $4,925 grant from the Dart Foundation to implement computer science offerings at the High School. The Foundation's mission is to advance and encourage youth education, primarily in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Grant money will be used to purchase Android tablets to be used in the school's new Computer Science Essentials course.
Computer Science Essentials, which will be offered beginning in Spring 2018, is aligned with current industry standards in collaboration with Project Lead the Way (PLTW). It will provide students with access to a diverse set of computation thinking concepts, fundamentals, and tools, allowing them to gain understanding and build confidence in computer science. Students will be provided opportunities to use visual, block-based programming and seamlessly transition to text-based programming languages to create apps and develop websites. Students will apply computational thinking practices, build their vocabularies, and collaborate just as professionals would to solve real-world problems.
The implementation of Computer Science Essentials will be an important step in expanding Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) offerings throughout the District. Our multi-year vision includes expanding computer science and engineering offerings at the secondary level as well as integrating STEM into the mathematics and science curricula at the elementary level.
