School Meals Offered Free Through End of 2020
Thanks to waivers from the United States Department of Agriculture and the PA Department of Education, we are pleased to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students for the remainder of 2020. Please review the attached memo for details. Parents/guardians of online students should complete and return the attached opt-in form to participate. Online families, please allow a lead time of two days between submitting your form and your first pickup (by Monday for Wednesday pickup or by Thursday for Monday pickup).
Food Service Update - January 2021
Students RESIDING in our District who are enrolled in any of the following learning options are eligible for free meals:
- Full In-Person (Kindergarten through Grade 8) can receive FREE meals in school
- In-Person/Hybrid (Grade 9 through Grade 12) can receive a combination of FREE meals in school and through the opt-in Meal Pick-Up program
- L-S Online (Kindergarten through Grade 12) can opt in to receive FREE meals through the Meal Pick-Up program
- ALL CHILDREN IN THE L-S DISTRICT (AGES 0 TO 18) MAY OPT IN TO RECEIVE FREE MEALS THROUGH THE PICK-UP PROGRAM.
L-S students receiving in-person instruction can select one breakfast and one lunch at no charge. Students can also purchase snacks, a second entree, and a-la-carte items at regular cost. Students will need to go through the main checkout lines at each school, as we still need to track the number of breakfast and lunch meals served. Meals will not be served over the weekend or on weekdays when school is not in session (i.e., holidays and in-service days). The District continues to encourage any interested family to fill out a Free and Reduced Application to determine eligibility so that benefits can continue when this program expires.
Meal Pick-Up distribution (for online students, hybrid students on virtual days, and children residing in the district but not yet enrolled in school) is as follows:
MEAL PICKUP PROCEDURE:
Parents MUST complete and submit an OPT-IN FORM to enter the program. Meal pickups take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:30-2:00 p.m. in front of the Performing Arts Center (PAC) entrance at L-S High School.

Update: Free School Meals Extended Through 2020-2021 School Year
I hope this letter finds you well and adapting to the changes of this unusual school year. I am happy to say that we have seen an increase in students partaking in our breakfast and lunch programs through the free school meals program. I am also very excited to announce that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and PA Department of Education (PDE) have extended the program through the end of the current school year! ALL STUDENTS continue to be eligible for daily FREE breakfast and lunch meals in school cafeterias.
The following should answer some common questions about this program:
What makes a meal? This remains the biggest question for students.
- A school breakfast meal consists of choices of fruit, grains, and milk. All of the breakfast components must be on a student’s tray for the meal to be free.
- A school lunch meal consists of four components: an entrée, a fruit, a vegetable, and a grain. At least three of the four lunch components must be on a student’s tray for the meal to be free.
- Seconds, premium items, and extras like ice cream or pretzels are not included and are priced as usual. The food service team is prepared to guide the students to make the necessary choices.
How about virtual learners? We are still offering bagged meal pick-ups for our online learners. This opportunity extends to preschool and younger siblings as well. However, a completed Opt-In Form MUST be submitted before being added to the pick-up list. Opt-In forms must be received in the Food Service office two days before the first scheduled pick-up day (by Thursday for Monday pick-ups or Monday for Wednesday pick-ups). Details about pick-up times and locations are included on the Opt-In form.
How can I change my free/reduced status? Anyone who qualified for free/reduced lunch last school year, or who feels their child's status should be free/reduced, must submit a completed application to their child’s school office. Paper applications are available from any school office or online at schoolcafe.com.
We hope that you will encourage your children to try something new by getting their meals at school. As always, the L-S food service team is dedicated to serving all students the best and healthiest meals each and every day.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with further questions or concerns. Thank you!
Questions & Answers about Free School Meals
It has been quite the eventful week in Food Services. We have seen a jump in breakfast and lunch participation due to the new waiver that allows ALL students to receive free meals. I just wanted to take a moment to clarify all of the questions that have been coming in to us.
Who can receive free meals? From now until December 31, 2020 (pending funding) ALL students, regardless of classification (free/reduced/paid), can receive daily free breakfast and/or lunch meals. Families do not have to do anything additional to receive the free meals at this time. Simply encourage your kids to enjoy the meals offered at school. This is such a wonderful opportunity for all students to try and to enjoy school meals. It is our hope that all parents encourage their children to partake in the breakfasts and lunches offered at school.
What makes a meal? This is the biggest question of the day. The waivers state that all students are able to receive a free meal. A school meal consists of four components: an entrée, a fruit, a vegetable, and milk. A student must have three of those four required lunch components on their tray to receive a free meal. Seconds, premium items, and extras like ice cream or pretzels are not included and are priced as usual. Our team is prepared to help guide the students to make the necessary choices.
How about virtual learners? A completed Opt In Form MUST be submitted before being added to the pickup list. Opt In forms MUST be received by the Food Service office two days prior to the first scheduled pick up: Thursday for Monday pick up and Monday for Wednesday pick up.
How can I change my free/reduced status? Anyone who was free/reduced last school year, or anyone that feels their status should be free/reduced, must submit a completed application to their child’s school office. You may obtain a paper application from any school office or complete the application online at schoolcafe.com.
As always, the Food Service team at L-S is dedicated to serving all students the best and healthiest meals each and every day. Please do not hesitate to contact us with further questions or concerns. Thank you!
