Spectator Guidelines for 2020-2021 Winter Athletic Events

Winter Sports Spectator Guidelines 202

The Lampeter-Strasburg School District Athletic Department has followed the recent updates from the DOH, NFHS, PDE, PIAA, and SMAC on how to safely and successfully host interscholastic events. As additional information is released, we will adjust or adapt accordingly. We remind all parents and fans that limited spectators are permitted at athletic events at this time. Please assist us in maintaining a safe and positive environment for all athletes and coaches/staff by adhering to this mandate.

We ask that everyone review and follow the regulations before so that student-athletes can safely compete for the full season. We need everyone's help because . . . Kids come first. We are L-S. We ARE family. We are ALL in this together!

General Expectations

Individuals are required to wear face coverings unless they meet the exception of Section 3 of the Secretary of Health's updated Universal Face Coverings Order from November 17:

Everyone must wear a face covering, such as a mask. Coaches, athletes, and spectators (if permitted) must wear face coverings indoors at all times.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Universal Face Coverings Order

Basketball

In compliance with the current Order of the Secretary of the PA Department of Health for Mitigation and Enforcement spectator access to winter sports may be permitted—dependent upon the size and layout of each individual facility.

Maximum Occupancy / Allowable Indoor Rate
0-2,000 people / 10% of Maximum Occupancy
2,001 - 10,000 people / 5% of Maximum Occupancy
Over 10,000 people / No Events over 500 people.

At the L-S, the High School Main Gymnasium maximum occupancy is 2,000.

  • Only one side of the bleachers will be open for spectators to avoid interaction with players, coaches, officials, and fans (1,000 seats). This translates to 100 total spectators permitted in the gym (10% of 1,000 is 100).
  • For Basketball practices, we will not exceed the maximum total staff/player personnel in attendance.
  • For Basketball games, spectators may attend with voucher allotments determined by the L-S Athletic Department. Currently (12/4/20), 2 tickets per L-S player/coach/cheerleader and 2 tickets per visiting player/coach will be provided.
  • Tickets should be given to household/immediate family members only.

The High School Upstairs Gymnasium maximum occupancy is 150

  • For Basketball practices, we will not exceed the maximum total staff/player personnel in attendance.
  • For JH Basketball contests, given the current PA Department of Health Mitigation Order previously referenced, venues hosting events are limited to specific occupancy limits (this is in addition to the social distancing and masking mandates). The upper gym occupancy is 150. The “current” limit by the order permits us to have 10% of this occupancy (or 15 attendees). The occupancy limit allowable (15) includes staff (officials, trainers, event workers, coaches). Given this constraint, we are unable to have spectators. The bleacher areas will be utilized for players, coaches and staff to socially distance while not engaging in competition on the court.

Swimming

  • As of December 2020, the L-S YMCA is currently not allowing spectators at swim meets.
  • For meets, we will utilize a fixed camera to record the contest on the L-S YouTube channel.

Wrestling

In compliance with the current Order of the Secretary of the PA Department of Health for Mitigation and Enforcement spectator access to winter sports may be permitted—dependent upon the size and layout of each individual facility.
