6th grader Terra Dunham spelled her way to victory at the annual Martin Meylin spelling bee, held on January 28. She competed in a field of 30 of the middle school's best spellers. Each of these students had earned a place in the competition by winning classroom and team bees.
Dr. Peart served as the official pronouncer and Mrs. D'Agostino, Mrs. Feerrar and Mrs. Fisher were the judges. The competition lasted about 90 minutes and ended with a long back-and-forth for the win between Terra and 7th grader Hannah Mencer. Words like raucous, statistician, disingenuous, and audacious were spelled before Terra finally won with the word salinity. Terra, Hannah, and 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishers Jillan Pontz, Jarred Getchis, and Hailey Weaver will advance to the County Spelling Bee semi-finals at Conestoga Valley Middle School on February 5. Emma Medlock will serve as an alternate.
Congratulations to Terra, the advancing spellers, and all who competed in the bee!
