Soup's On at Cafe 54!
May 21, 2014
The Cafe 54 crew on their big day.
For a few hours on a rainy afternoon, a classroom at Hans Herr Elementary was transformed into Café 54 - a student-staffed bistro with delicious food and spectacular service. The café was the result of Mrs. Rutledge and her third grade students’ year-long adventure in soup-making. Throughout the year, the students have mixed up batches of chicken corn soup, tomato tortellini soup, chili, white chicken chili, broccoli soup and corn and crab chowder. The students shopped for the ingredients, followed recipes, and prepared the soup for sale at Hans Herr. The class also took a field trip to Wesley United Methodist Church to donate soup to their program. Each exercise helped students hone their cognitive, fine motor, social, speech, and language skills. Today’s restaurant experience put all of those skills to use as the class worked together as hosts, servers, cooks, and cashiers. Patrons were treated to a beautifully decorated room and seated at tables complete with handmade placemats. Meals consisted of drinks, salad, choice of tomato tortellini soup or crab and corn chowder, and dessert (a Nutella dipped strawberry!). Service was very quick and attentive and the experience was wonderful for all involved.
Café 54 hopes to reopen next year for a new adventure. To learn more about the project and how you can help Café 54, please visit the classroom blog and donorschoose project pages. The donorschoose deadline for next school year is June 1, 2014.
