Holiday Shopping Experience at Hans Herr Store 54
December 17, 2014
Store 54 Staff celebrates the grand opening
Hans Herr Elementary students operated a store from their classroom, Store 54 (their room number). Each student held a job for the day: greeter, salesman, sample person, cashier, bagger, and even an gift wrapper. Earlier in October students learned about stores by touring Darrenkamp’s and shopping for ingredients, as they donated a $25 gift card to the class. For about two months students brainstormed their store ideas, learned about assembly lines, and created edible products to sell. On the store day, most items sold out before noon such as peppermint Oreo bark and double dipped pretzels. We used the materials acquired from the Donor’s Choose project like the microwave, measuring cups, mixing bowls, and kitchen cart.
Store 54 provided students the opportunity to connect academic, speech and language, fine motor, and social/emotional skills by strengthening and transferring their skills in an authentic way. In addition it also facilitated creativity, problem solving, teamwork, interpersonal skills, inquisitiveness, and self-advocacy. The profits from the store will use be used to make a donation the Clare House, a homeless shelter in Lancaster for women and children. The class will be purchasing items from their wish list. Remaining funds will be used for community-based instruction field trips.
The class set up another Donor’s Choose project, which expires January 7th. Please consider making a donation. The class still needs $562 to fund the project request for technology which will help make future opportunities for our students possible.
