If you know an L-S graduate who deserves to be recognized for service in his/her profession or within the community, we would like to hear from you! We are currently accepting nominations for the 2014 Lampeter-Strasburg Distinguished Alumni Award. To be considered for the award, the person must be an L-S graduate from the Class of 1999 or earlier and must be nominated by a friend, colleague, or family member. Please download the Distinguished Alumni Award Nomination Form to get started. Completed nomination packets must be received by March 31, 2014, to be considered. The award winner will be publicly recognized at the annual Board Recognition Dinner on May 9, 2014, at the High School.

This year's Burrowes Scholars ceremony took place at Martin Meylin Middle School on Thursday, May 1, 2014. The evening's presiding students were Marah Brubaker and Ethan Emmert, both of whom are three-time scholars. Opening remarks were delivered by Dr. Peart and guests were treated to entertainment by the high school's Madrigal Singers. Each principal announced the awards for his students while Board members Mrs. Melissa Herr, Mr. Jeff Mills, and Dr. Doreen Packer served as presenters. The fifth grade awards are based on solely on grades while the eighth and eleventh grade awards are divided into subject categories.

Lampeter-Strasburg School District held its 40th annual Board Recognition Banquet on Friday, May 9, 2014. This is the event at which employees are recognized for years of service, National Board certification, and retirement. It is also when Teacher of the Year and Distinguished Alumni awards are officially announced. Some highlights from this year’s dinner.

Three Lampeter-Strasburg School District alumni were inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, September 19. The official ceremony was held at the Hans Herr Elementary cafeteria. The inductees were publicly recognized later in the evening during the annual Hall of Fame football game. Congratulations to the Class of 2014!

Students in the Lampeter-Strasburg High School Art Department worked together this year to make necklaces and other wearable items in honor of their beloved friend and peer, Meredith Demko. With thoughts of Meredith’s creative talents and positive spirit, the students celebrated her life by working collaboratively and, in turn, experienced one of the most meaningful reasons for creating art.

Seniors Marah Brubaker and Ethan Emmert were honored as November 2014 Students of the Month by the Lancaster South Rotary. The commendation was in honor and recognition of "outstanding achievement." We are very proud of these two outstanding students.

After a long, long winter and a stormy day that brought the ceremony indoors, the Class of 2014 has finally graduated! Congratulations and best wishes to the 268 seniors who received their diplomas tonight and will head into the world as Lampeter-Strasburg alumni.

The Lampeter-Strasburg School District Community Engagement Meeting was held on March 31, 2014, in the High School cafeteria. We are appreciative of the community members who took time from their busy schedules to become informed and to provide feedback to the District. As promised, it was an engaging evening!
Eckman wins 8th Grade Leadership Award

Taylor Danielle Eckman won the George W. Myers 8th Grade Leadership Award this morning at the Martin Meylin Awards Assembly. This award is given based on Leadership - providing support and encouragement to classmates and staff and leadership by example/actions. The award is given the in the spirit of former Martin Meylin Principal George W. Myers, who led the school for 26 years. It has been presented to a deserving eighth grade student every year since 1992. Way to go Danielle!
Football Programs Raise Nearly $4500 for Wounded Warrior Project

The Lampeter-Strasburg and Cocalico Football Programs combined their efforts to raise money for the Pennsylvania Wounded Warrior Project. Together, we were able to raise $4,465.50. Thank you to everyone who generously purchased a t-shirt and to the dozens of sponsors.

The Keystone Degree is the highest honor a member of the Pennsylvania FFA can receive. It takes hundreds of hours of work, the completion of three prior degrees, community service time, good grades and a commitment to excellence to achieve this high honor. L-S is proud to announce that four students were awarded the Keystone Degree at the Midwinter FFA Convention, which was held during the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg on Monday, January 6.

Inspired to support a team member who had recently been diagnosed with and is managing Crohn’s disease, the L-S girls soccer team devoted themselves to raising money for treatment and research of Crohn's and ulcerative colitis. The girls raised more than $4,000 this fall with a pair of successful fundraisers.

Wednesday (12/10) 5th grader Lindsey Steeleappeared on FOX43 News First at Four, to help deliver the weather forecast! Lindsey was be on television with FOX43's Chief Meteorologist MaryEllen Pann, presenting the weather report for FOX43 viewers. As one of MaryEllen's Weather Kids, Lindsey also got a peek behind the scenes of how a television station operates.

On Saturday, February 1, 2014, over 250 Hans Herr girls and their adult escorts took to the dance floor at the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA for the third annual Sweetheart Heart Dance held to raise money for Santa’s Helpers, a nonprofit organization that helps L-S families during the holidays.

Hans Herr learning support teacher Andrea Rutledge was the winner of this summer’s Strasburg Family Eyecare movie review contest. To enter the contest, teachers were asked to watch and write a review of a short vision therapy video about how students may experience vision difficulties at school.

As a result of unfavorable revenue and expenditure imbalances experienced by public education in general, the Lampeter-Strasburg School District has been examining its expenditures very closely and has removed from its budgets since the 2008-09 school year over $6,210,800.

The results are in and we are proud to report that L-S students and staff raised $1388.40 as a result of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge issued by administrators on the first day of school. The six participants had previously been challenged by high school technology education teacher Adam Zurn, who pledged to donate $100 for each administrator who dared to brave the ice water. The team jumped at the chance.

On Saturday, April 12, the Lampeter-Strasburg Indoor Guard Boosters will host a Tournament Indoor Assocation competition at the High School. The event features percussion, dance, twirlers and guard and starts at 3:00pm.

Cyber-bullying has become one of the most challenging issues, as cell phone, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat, etc. dominate the lives of young people.

L-S’s favorite son James Wolpert (class of 2009) visited each of the school buildings on Friday, January 10, and caused quite a stir at each one. The entire L-S community rallied behind James during his time on The Voice, watching every show and voting for him by phone, text, web and social media. We would like to believe we even played a role in his Twitter Instant Save. So we were thrilled when he contacted the district asking if he could come by and thank everyone for their support.

Junior Sarah Koebley will perform in the 126th Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day 2015. She will also take part in a BandFest field performance and will march in a Disneyland parade during a five-day trip to California. Sarah is participating in the events as a member of the Cavalcade of Bands Association (CBA) Honor Band. She auditioned to become a part of the elite ensemble and has been practicing for the Rose Bowl throughout the past year.

Lampeter-Strasburg School District's Athletic Department was awarded the Lancaster-Lebanon League Sportsmanship Award for Spring 2014 as well as for the 2013/14 school year. Congratulations to the L-S athletic department and to all of our dedicated coaches and student athletes.

The Lampeter-Strasburg chapter of the Garden Spot Future Farmers of America (FFA) had a banner year at the National FFA Convention and Expo. Two teams attended the conference, which ran from October 29 – November 1, 2014, in Louisville, Kentucky. Both teams had previously won at the state level and were representing Pennsylvania at the national competition.

Lampeter-Strasburg High School Assistant Cook Pam Rice recently took home the grand prize in a county-wide school district soup contest. Mrs. Rice entered the contest through the Red Rose Chapter of the School Nutrition Association with her Chicken Fajita Soup recipe.

2012 graduate Ben Baker (son of 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Baker and nephew of band director Mr. Royer) will soon attempt to break the world record for kick scooter riding. He and a team of 24 others – the Night Razors - plan to ride a Razor scooter around a track for 336.11 miles.

The American FFA Degree was awarded to three Lampeter-Strasburg graduates on November 2 at the National FFA Convention & Expo in Louisville, Kentucky. The American FFA Degree is awarded only to FFA members who have demonstrated the highest level of commitment to FFA. Only half of one percent of FFA members receive the degree, making it one of the organization’s highest honors.

L-S Idol is back for 2014! Tryouts will be held from 9am-4pm on Saturday, January 25 at the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg. Categories this year are elementary, middle and high school and, new this year, duets. Applications are due to the singer's school office by Wednesday, December 18.

Two L-S coaches have been honored with the designation of L-L League Coach of the Year. Below are their write-ups as they appeared in the LNP L-L League Fall All-Stars 2014 sports tabloid. The insert was published in the December 9 issue of the paper.

On Wednesday, May 14, 2014, eight sixth, seventh and eighth graders attended a Math 24 competition at the IU. Almost 100 students from around the IU participated in the competition. The eight L-S students earned their places in the contest by competing in class competitions as well as the Martin Meylin competition.

Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District technology specialist Timothy Geiter was named the 2014 Outstanding Technical Support Person of the Year by the Pennsylvania Association for Educational Communications and Technology (PAECT). The award was presented at the organization’s annual banquet on Monday, February 10, 2014, at the Pennsylvania Educational Technology Expo & Conference (PETE&C) in Hershey.

Lampeter Elementary School was named the top fundraiser in the 2014 Buck-a-Book campaign from the Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon. Students at Lampeter Elementary read over 11,000 books throughout the program, raising almost $7,400 that will be used for literacy efforts in the local community.

Inspired by the memory of Meredith Demko, students and teachers in several high school art classes have collaborated to create a series of handmade necklaces. The Clay and Sculpture students fabricated pendants, Advanced Art students painted them, and the Jewelry and Metals students put the necklaces together. A collection of 18 necklaces is now available for the community to purchase through an online auction.

The Martin Meylin 7th and 8th Grade Band played the National Anthem at the Hershey Bears game on Saturday, February 22, 2014. It turned out to be an unofficial L-S night at the Giant Center, with 61 students performing and more than 240 friends and family members attending the game.

Ten students from each grade at the middle school were chosen as September Students of the Month. The theme for September was "Back to School and Ready to Learn." Great job!

Seventh grader Caroline McEligot is currently starring in the Fulton Theatre's production of Irving Berlin's White Christmas. Based on the classic 1954 film, the show premiered at the Fulton on November 18 and runs through January 4. Caroline plays the role of the precocious Susan Waverly, the daughter of General Henry Waverly. She has previously appeared in Fulton productions of Gypsy and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, as well in numerous shows at American Music Theater, Ephrata playhouse, Susquehanna Stage Company, and more.

Martin Meylin eighth grader Theodore “Teddy” Long, son of Ted and Janet Long of Willow Street, has been named a semifinalist in the National Geographic Society Pennsylvania State Geographic Bee. The state bee is sponsored by Google and Plum Creek. It is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, which is now in its 26th year.

Martin Meylin Middle School teacher Memory D'Agostino was one of five grand prize recipients from the United Way of Lancaster County on December 8, 2014. The United Way team surprised Mrs. D'Agostino in her classroom with a team of well-wishers, plus balloons and an assortment of prizes from which to choose.

The LSHS music department is holding a silent auction before the Holiday Music Concert on Thursday, December 18. The auction will be held in the Grand Hallway beginning at 6:30pm and wrapping up at 8:30pm. Proceeds from the auction will benefit students' spring trip to Nashville.

The annual Lampeter-Strasburg High School National Honor Society (NHS) induction ceremony was held on November 18, 2014. Thirteen seniors and 15 juniors were formally inducted and joined the 20 current members of NHS. Congratulations to all!

Three Lampeter-Strasburg School District students are among the 16,000 academically talented students named today as semifinalists in the 60th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Selected from 1,400,000 applicants, the semifinalists represent less than one percent of high school seniors nationwide and include the highest scoring entrants in each state.

Four Lampeter-Strasburg School District seniors have been named as Commended Students in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented to these scholastically talented students - Tyler Andrews, Serena Williams, Daniel Cutler, and Marah Brubaker.

The Pennsylvania Core Standards took effect in March of 2014. As described by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Pennsylvania’s Core Standards offer a set of rigorous, high-quality academic expectations in English Language Arts and Mathematics that all students should master by the end of each grade level. The PA Core Standards are robust and relevant to the real world and reflect the knowledge and skills our young people need to succeed in life after high school, in both post-secondary education and a globally competitive workforce.

Thoughts of the prom may seem distant in the cold of January, but the big night will be here before we know it. A group of dedicated parents have been hard at work since this summer planning a fantastic post-prom for 2014. This year's theme is Island/Survivor, but organizers promise no one will be voted off the island at this party.

Lampeter-Strasburg students donated a record 1,274 toys this year as part of the District's annual Toys for Tots "Stuff the Bus" campaign. Representatives from the United States Marine Corps escorted Santa and his elves (members of the LSHS Interact Club) around campus to collect toys as part of the countywide service project.

Not snow, a 12 day break or even the polar vortex could deter Martin Meylin's Willy Wonka Jr. musical from a fantastic run from January 9-11, 2014. Mrs. D' Agostino led the talented cast and crew to prove "the show must go on" despite many missed and shortened rehearsals.

For a few hours on a rainy afternoon, a classroom at Hans Herr Elementary was transformed into Café 54 - a student-staffed bistro with delicious food and spectacular service. The café was the result of Mrs. Rutledge and her third grade students’ year-long adventure in soup-making.

It was announced by the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) that seniors Mattie Lefever and Ian Goss and junior Sam Welk have been selected to perform in the PMEA Lower District 7 Band Festival. The event will be held on January 9 and 10 at Conestoga Valley High School and will include 120 talented musicians from Adams, Lancaster and York counties.

Five cast members from the Fulton Theater's current production of Les Miserables are either current Lampeter-Strasburg students or recent graduates. All are members of the musical's Additional Company.

High school health and physical education teacher Mark Trach competed at the 2014 USTA National Championships in Arizona during November. He is the captain of the 55+ Lancaster mens tennis team. The team advanced to nationals by winning their local and sectional matches through the summer and fall. Way to go, Mr. Trach!

Thirty middle school students faced off at the annual Martin Meylin Spelling Bee on Wednesday, January 29, 2014. From the first word, bric-a-brac, to the winning word, chocolate, it was an exciting competition. Sixth grader Jillian Pontz was the winner and will advance to the County Spelling Bee semi-finals at Conestoga Valley Middle School.

A group from Chapter 1008 of The Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) visited Lampeter-Strasburg High School on Wednesday, December 10, to facilitate panel discussions about the war. Students in grades 9-12 attended small group sessions in which they could listen to the veterans’ first-hand experiences and ask questions.

A new year means 180+ days worth of breakfasts and lunches served in the L-S cafeterias. We are always striving to bring healthy, delicious food to our students and staff. The Food Services Department would like to thank everyone who participated in the school lunch survey last year. Responses were tabulated and feedback has been shared.
