Author Don Brown Visits Hans Herr
December 13, 2013
Author/illustrator Don Brown came to Hans Herr Elementary School to share his insights into writing and illustrating historical nonfiction picture books. Since 1983, the PTO has funded the yearly appearance of an author or illustrator in the elementary schools.
Don writes about and illustrates historical events, mostly from American history. His latest published book The Great American Dust Bowl is done in graphic novel style, taking a difficult subject and translating it through words and pictures into an easily understood format for elementary school students. It is currently ranked in the top 50 in three separate categories on Amazon.com and received a starred review from the American Library Association's Booklist. Don has written over two dozen books and received awards from book publishers, the American Library Association, and teachers' organizations.
During his presentation, Don compared his writing to students' efforts in class. He spoke of the hard work it takes for him to "get the magic" out of his brain and onto the page, either as words or pictures. From an inexpensive notebook bought for a dollar at the local CVS to the completed book, Don showed students sketches, rough drafts dummy copies and final artwork to the finished product. It is intriguing to learn that as a child Don was not a big reader and hated history in high school. His presentation is encouragement for all.
