Rules for creating a Works Cited page using MLA:

  • Arrange entries in ABC order using the author's Last Name.
  • If there is no Author, use the first word from the Title.
  • If the author has a title like Ph.D., Sister, S.J., Lady, Sir, Saint, etc., omit this in the Works Cited entry.
  • When a corporate group is the author:
  • Do not abbreviate a corporation.
  • Enter the corporate author as the author even if they are also the publishing company.
  • When arranging entries without an Author:
  • ignore "The," "An," or "And" if it is the first word of the Title.
  • If you don't have a piece of information, move on without it.
  • You may abbreviate:
  • n.d. for no date (publication)
  • ed. for edition (7th ed.)
  • n.p. for no page assigned
  • You should include a only when the reader probably cannot locate the source without it or when your instructor requires it.
  • DO NOT bullet your entries.
  • Reverse indent each entry.
  • Double-space your entire document.
  • 12-point font is standard.
