Author Jen Bryant Visits Hans Herr
Award-winning writer and poet Jen Bryant visited Hans Herr Elementary School recently to speak to students. Mrs. Bryant is the author of 37 fiction and nonfiction books, including more than a dozen biographies, for readers of all ages. She lives in nearby Chester County and collaborates with illustrators from around the country.
Each guest author session began with Mrs. Bryant asking groups to think about writing in the same way as they think about playing sports or musical instruments (i.e. things that need to be practiced). She urged children to “practice, read things you enjoy, and practice some more,” stressing that anyone can become a good writer. She also encouraged students to write about what they know, including familiar people and places.
Ms. Bryant focused on the importance of research and storytelling in writing, using her own work as examples. She highlighted her books about Louis Braille, creator of the system of reading and writing for the blind, artists Georgia O’Keefe and Horace Pippin, and the Lindbergh kidnapping and trial. The author cited travel, books, interviews, and old photographs/journals as ways to gather information for writing. Students are sure to translate their inspiration from her visit into their own research and writing.
As in past years, the 2017 guest author visit was fully funded by the Hans Herr PTO and coordinated by Hans Herr librarians. For more information about Jen Bryant, please visit her website at jenbryant.com.
