L-S Students Lend a Helping Hand
L-S Model UN members pose with an LNP photographer for a story about what schools are doing to help hurricane victims.
Although the weather has been beautiful here, millions of people in other areas have been impacted by a recent string of severe weather. Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria have devastated parts of Texas, Florida, and the Caribbean and the season is far from over. Eager to help, groups from each of our four school buildings have jumped at the chance to coordinate relief efforts:
High School Homeroom Collection Contest
The Lampeter-Strasburg High School community raised more than $3600 in two weeks to benefit the American Red Cross. Pioneer Interact and the L-S Model UN joined forces to coordinate a homeroom collection drive and contest. The fundraising effort ran from September 5-15, with the prize being breakfast cooked by Family & Consumer Sciences teacher Mrs. Lynch.
Results announced on September 18 showed that four homerooms brought in over $12 per person.
- 1st place: Mr. Titter’s homeroom with $663.57
- 2nd place: Ms. Schneider’s homeroom with an amazing $182.25
- 3rd place: Mrs. Lynch’s homeroom with $408.00
- 4th place: Mrs. Wade’s homeroom with $355.50
Students from these homerooms enjoyed a well-deserved breakfast buffet the morning of September 22, including eggs, donuts, fruit, cookies, and more.
Thanks to all who participated!
The middle and elementary schools are just beginning their hurricane relief efforts. Custom-designed Team Houston neoprene bracelets will be sold at Lampeter, Hans Herr, and Martin Meylin. Proceeds from the bracelets will be used to help students in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) to get back on their feet with new school uniforms. Bracelets feature the L-S logo and the HISD logo to symbolize students helping students. The Martin Meylin Student Council purchased the bracelets, which will be sold at all three schools over the next few weeks for $5 each.
