Martin Meylin Student in State Geographic Bee
April 3, 2014
Teddy Long will compete in the Pennsylvania State Geographic Bee on April 4, 2014
Martin Meylin eighth grader Theodore “Teddy” Long, son of Ted and Janet Long of Willow Street, has been named a semifinalist in the National Geographic Society Pennsylvania State Geographic Bee. The state bee is sponsored by Google and Plum Creek. It is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, which is now in its 26th year. Teddy won the 2014 Martin Meylin Geography Bee in January as well as the 2012 bee as a sixth grader. After the school-wide bee, he took a qualifying test which was submitted to the National Geographic Society. The National Geographic Society invited students with the top 100 scores in each of the 50 states, District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories to compete at the state level. Teddy is one of only seven Lancaster County students to advance to the semifinals.
The Pennsylvania State Geographic Bee will be held at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg on Friday, April 4, 2014. The state winner will receive $100, a National Geographic DVD, and a trip to Washington D.C. to represent Pennsylvania in the National Geographic Bee finals from May 19-21, 2014. The finals will be moderated by journalist Soledad O’Brien and the final round will be aired on public television stations nationwide on May 22. The winner will receive a $50,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the Society. He or she also will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the Galapagos Islands to experience geography firsthand through up-close encounters with the islands’ unique wildlife and landscapes.
Update 4/11/2014 - Teddy finished 16th at the State Bee, just one question short of making it to the next level. Great job!
