Middle School Math Madness

April 28, 2014

PA Math League

It's a great year to be a math student at Martin Meylin Middle School! Students in grades six, seven, and eight acheived in a variety of competitions throughout the year.

More than 160 Martin Meylin students took part in the 2014 PA Math League competition. The contest took place on February 25 and consisted of 35 challenging multiple choice questions with a 30 minute time limit. The top six scorers from each grade were submitted to the PA Math League. The Grade 7 team tied for 8th place in the state and came in 3rd in our five-county region. Individually, seventh grader Jansen Miller tied for 11th in the state and 4th in the region. The grade eight team was 15th in the state.

A record number of 15 seventh and eighth grade students participated in Mathcounts this year. In January, several team members competed at Conestoga Valley, where Ike Esh was the top scorer. Mathletes also competed at Centerville Middle School for a larger, 21-team event. Emma Cohen was the top scorer in the competition and the Martin Meylin teams took both first and second place. The final competition was held at Millersville University on February 22 and included 171 students from 28 schools in 4 counties. Nate Kinsey placed 16th and Ike Esh earned a position in the countdown round to finish 7th overall. The team, comprised of Nathan Brightup, Josh Eidemiller, Ike Esh, and Caleb Ferrari, finished 6th.

Challenge 2

And Martin Meylin's favorite math game was taken to the next level at the schoolwide Challenge 24 competition on April 24. Nick Marrone was the sixth grade champion, Luke Waltman took second, and Grant Kershner and Seth Beers tied for third. Nick and Luke will move on to the Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 competition in May. In grades seven and eight, six participants will be competing at the IU tournament: Izzy Subacz, Ramon Estevez, Patrick Holmes, Kris Pirozzi, Morgan Bucher, and the 7th & 8th grade champion Kelsey Kimmel.

Kudos to all of our exceptional math students and their hardworking teachers!
